New Who Review for “Planet of the Ood”

Posted By on May 10, 2008

But first a short review for “Speed Racer”, Wow! If you liked the cartoon, you are going to love the movie. I will say that this film gets the closest for making live action look like the cartoon it was based on including the cuts and wipes. I could animate what they did and have a Speed Racer cartoon. The only thing it was missing was the narrator.

Now onto the Ood with the usual spoilers behind the cuts and in the comments

Overall I think this is one of the better outings this year for the Doctor. Still loving Donna more and more each week.

I didn’t recognize Tim McInnerny at all. Peter picked up that Lord Percy Percy was the head of Ood Operations.

It was nice to see the Ood again and learn more about them. I enjoyed them in the first episode I saw them in and was glad to hear they were back.

Next week Sontarians…..ha.

I am grateful that the Ood are now more 3 dimensional than their previous appearance.

Ok this is yet another large evil corporation story with another evil twist. But still the explanation of what they did to the Ood was just heartbreaking. I loved Donna’s reaction when the Doctor let her hear the song for the first time.

Again Donna shows her independence and ability to think through a problem for herself rather than just asking the Doctor for an explanation. She shows no fear for the most part. Seriously if I had an entire cargo container of Ood with red eyes coming at me with their translators balls, I’d scream too.

Then there was the scene with “Doctor Donna Friends!” Notice that the Ood put them together as one entity for the rest of the episode. In fact most people are putting them as a couple and they are protesting that they are not a couple.

I went back and watched “The Impossible Planet” and “Satan’s Pit” again. It is interesting to watch the Ood knowing how they became as they are. And why the telepathic field effects them so much. I don’t know if they (being the writers) had the Ood that sorted out two seasons ago but they have done right by them in this episode.

Good acting, interesting mystery, and some touchy social issues being touched on.

I liked it a lot.

I loved the Oodsong. I a bit annoyed that it will be at least another year before we get another soundtrack album. I look forward to owning that music.

am i the only person who recognized the guard (the one who tried to catch the Doctor with the big claw…reminded me of a claw machine trying to pick up a toy)was the guy who the chef was always screaming at in Chef? (i don’t remember his name…but i’m sure it was him).
And don’t worry, with the other guy…it took me about 15 minutes in until i realized “oh, its that guy from Black Adder!” that i was watching. I think it was the hairline that gave him away.

The only thing i don’t understand (and it might be because i missed about 10 minutes at the start of the show…sorry, but when i can catch Salem to give him his medicine i have to do it no matter if the Doctor is on or not!)….
    But…..
Was this show supposed to be going on at the same time as the other two shows with the Ood (Impossible Planet and Satan’s Pit)…or was this supposed to be after or before?
The way the others were off on that remote area by the black hole it could be either way. But i thought maybe someone in here has a better grasp of the timeline than i do;)

Hmmm. Well, it was better than the first episode of the season, but I was frankly bored with the storyline. It seemed way too long. On the other hand, I loved the development of Donna. She refuses to be treated as a companion aka sidekick and insists on being a partner.

Roger Griffiths (Commander Kess in Planet of the Ood) played Everton in Chef! I completely missed recognizing Tim McInnerny, but Everton was really nagging at me while I watched it. I really should have recognized McInnerny, because I saw him not too long ago in Murder at the Vicarage.

I enjoyed the episode again. They say it took place in 4126. Did we get a date for The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit or 42 (which I think was supposed to take place around the same time)?

Things are definitely building up and I wonder when the bee comments will pay off.
