Mass Arts get my vote for

Posted By on May 19, 2007

Best entrance for a graduating class. I have been to a few graduations including my high school, college, and grad school ones. There have also been friends and relatives that I have gone to the ceremony. They play pomp and circumstance or some other solemn piece of music with the right form of gravitas. Except Mass Arts who brought in the students with a brass band playing New Orleans style jazz making this ceremony a big party from the git-go.

There were the usual speeches given to the students and those attending but there were some stand out speeches as well. Richard Pinsky was the Honorary Degree Recipient and if you don’t know him as the 3 term poet Laureate for the United States, you might remember him as the moderator in the metaphor-off between Sean Penn and Stephen Colbert. He read one of his newer poems towards the end of his remarks and it makes me want to go and get a book of his poetry. Last poet to do that for me was Seamus Heaney. Dr. Sam Schlosberg was my pick for best speaker with a lot to say and a good way to say it in shortest amount of time. He encouraged the students to continue to make art and use their abilities to better the world. All this without the usual phrases and platitudes you usual hear at a graduation.

Gwen! went for the beat of her personal trumpet player and wore a festive sparkly top hat instead of her mortar board. Her slight change to the outfit was minor as compared to some of the other offering. The fashion design students redesigned their gowns in ways that would make “Project Runway” proud.

We had a nice visit with Gwen! and had a great dinner at Vinny T’s of Boston with much good conversation. After dropping Gwen! off at her place, we went back to the hotel and crashed with Caroline falling asleep in the car on the way. This of course means that Caroline got up at 7:00 am ready to take on the day which is what we are going to do next.

I am grateful that we came up for Gwen!’s graduation.
