5,6 Pick Up Sticks

Posted By on September 29, 2004

Yesterday the remnants of Jeanne started to pound the Island with wind and rain. This morning both continued. I know we are seeing nothing like they had in Florida. So far our trees and power lines are up. There was some minor flooding in the usual places. The ground is saturated with water. I also know that I am very damp from dealing with the garbage and recycling today.

The town use to collect paper and plastic once a week for recycling. This year they changed it to plastics one week and paper the next. You can also put out 2 large items for pick up like a mattress and box springs or water damaged bookshelves. The rumor is that these are cost saving measures for the town. Now one week we have more plastic than we know what to do with and the other paper. I like the old system better.

There was an article in today

I have some friends who ran a restaurant and they were more than willing to send the unused food or leftovers to the poor, but as you said, it was not allowed.

    Seems an incredible waste.

I used to work in a restaurant. I once asked the managers why they couldn’t donate the food, and they too said it was because of state health rules. But they also said, that there was also the legality of it. if they gave the food to a charity and someone got sick, they could be held liable.

I hope you’re doing better Kath, Hope my poems give you some solace.

Thank EClark. They did help. I hadn’t read the road less traveled in a long time.
I’ll have a better idea how I am doing tomorrow.

I can’t believe the remnants of Jeanne are still alive and kicking. I’m down in Florida and I never realised how far north a hurricane can linger. We were pretty lucky here on the west coast, power was only out for about a day here for most people. I know that there are still a few with out power in this area today and many more with out power on the east coast. Hopefully we’re done with hurricanes for the season!
