I wish congratulations to Toby and Sarah Froud on the birth of their son Sebastian. Also congratulations to the proud grandparents.
Yes, the baby in Labyrinth is now a proud Daddy.
Think on that a moment especially if you were one of my readers that saw the film when it originally came out in the movie theaters.
Labyrinth is one of my touchstones for so many reasons.
When I left the movie theater in 1986, I immediately bought a ticket to see it again. I think the only two other films that I have seen more in the theater are Star Wars and the Adventures of Baron Munchausen but that is another story.
I fell in love with the film and the imagery and the costumes and well just about every part of it. My favorite character at the time was Sir Didymus. He still holds a place close in my heart. I will admit to being part of the David Bowie in very tight pants is nice to look at brigade, we are legion. The more I saw it, the more nuances came to light for me. I started looking for everything in Sarah’s room that we later see through out the film.
Over the years I helped friends recreate the costumes from the film for conventions. I even did them myself when Caroline was about 18 months old. It was her first costume. I have gotten to know those costumes so very well.
I have some props from the film including a mask that was used in the ballroom scene signed by Brian, Toby, and Wendy Froud and a couple of Goblin axes. I have a page from Brian Froud’s doodle book that he drew while designing the goblins for the film.
I have met many people since then who worked on the film. I can call a number of them now friends which is really kinda neat.
I first met Toby at the San Diego Comic Con the year that Peter was a guest of the convention. Ariel was with us and crushing on Toby something serious. Somewhere I have a picture of the two of them.
I got to know Toby through the doll-workshops he did with his mother Wendy which I have attended a few of over the years. I remember when he turned 21 and was going to be going out with family friends for a night on the town in New York. Somewhere I have a goblin hat he made during the critter making workshop.
Now he is a daddy and he is going to be a great one.
I am grateful that I have met the Frouds and I wish all the happiness to the family and Sebastian.
