I really Don’t Like the Waiting Game

Posted By on January 3, 2013

Since the initial crises has passed and we now have just about everyone in the know (It is interesting reading e-mails from people that Peter has a business relationship with and they don’t know what is going on), we are now in the what is next portion for this saga.

What is next is in patient rehabilitation. We are working on the where, how, and who and still awaiting the when. And they can’t give us an exact when because a number things have to be in place and Peter’s vitals have to be consistently at a certain level before they will even think of releasing him. Until that happens, we are in a holding pattern.

Where is going to be dependent on the Insurance company. (You honestly don’t know how many times I have thanked G-d that we have insurance although this is going to be expensive endeavor no matter what kind of insurance one has) The Insurance company is deciding what they are going to pay for. We have two possibilities that both take our insurance. I am waiting to hear what the decision was from that to figure out the next step.

So we are in the waiting game for now.

Peter is doing better every day. Yesterday he was able to lift up his right arm by himself and the fingers are coming back a little more every day. He can stand up but still can’t walk and the standing only lasts for so long. His face is even more normal than the day before. And he sat up in a chair for the first time since Saturday which he was very happy about and I was thrilled. The more he can get up, the sooner he gets out and onto the next step of the journey.

Keep those good thoughts coming. Peter says it is both gratifying and humbling about the number of people who are praying for them and keeping him in their thoughts and he appreciates and is thankful to each and every one of you.

Caroline has gone into stoic mode and is holding up rather well all things considered.

My sense of time is shot. I had to look at the computer to see what day it was. Time seems to have expanded and contracted all at the same time.

I am grateful for progress on so many fronts.

Very glad to hear that Peter’s progress is good and praying hard that it continues in that direction. Very much hoping that Peter can go home sooner rather than later and that things will work out on the insurance front as well. Good for Caroline handling this as well as she is. Don’t forget to take care of yourselves as well during all of this.

While I know the location isn’t especially convenient for you, I can say that Kessler Rehabilitation in New Jersey (3-4 locations, kessler-rehab.com) is justifiably listed among the best places nationally for rehab, and does phenomenal work. I was there for rehab after my injury last year, which was orthopedic — but they have a whole floor devoted to strokes and stroke recovery, and I talked to plenty of people there who came in worried that they’d never be even close to normal again and were leaving in better shape than they’d dreamed.

I’m hoping that there’s something just as good or better that’s close to you … but if not, please consider this. It’ll let you take care of yourself knowing that he’s in such good hands.

Gaylord in CT is world reknowned for rehab; that’s where they sent the Central Park Jogger. Not convenient to you, but a top-notch facility. Having just had Mike’s dad in and out of rehab for 5 weeks, we are very fussy about them, and have learned quite a bit about procedures & paperwork. So many, many good signs going on – you can’t hear us cheering all the way down there, but trust me, we’re quite loud!

  4. Continuing to send good thoughts your way. Give the big lug a pinch on his tuchus for me!

  5. Ken Garrison says:

Kathy, thank you for letting us know what is going on. I know that takes time, energy, and brainpower, all of which must be taxed for you right now. You are appreciated!

Sending good thoughts to all of you.

  6. Eric Cone says:

WE Thank you, Kathy… Honestly. You have so much to deal with, yet-here you are, again, keeping US informed. We are honored and touched by your generosity in this endeavor. Yet-I’m sure, this is a way for you to vent your own frustrations, at the same time… Please feel free to let it out; as-we will listen… Our number one concern, is PAD; but you have all my prayers, as well. Please…try to rest and keep up YOUR strength, too! WE are all pulling for you… Tell Peter we love him and he has our undying support. He has brought so much joy to OUR lives over these many years, and-I’m being selfish here; we need him to continue in these pursuits! I don’t know if it helps, but-I have been re-buying his books on my new nook app… WE WILL do whatever it takes, to help… Trust in God; I know he’s performed a few medical miracles for me… Peace be with All of you, and your families. And-again, Thank you for keeping us in the loop…

I just wanted to say that I have a friend who had a major stroke and they have made a huge recovery, but it took much longer than Peter’s progress is coming along. This makes me feel that he will be just fine. I hope these words are encouraging! My best to you all! Hang in there.

So glad he’s doing better! I know it’s likely to be a long process, but it sounds like he’s making some great headway already.

  12. Sean Taylor says:

So glad to hear Peter is doing better. He was the first pro to ever remember my name and greet me by it (way back in the day now). Hang in there, all of you. Our prayers are with you all.

  13. Brian says:

He is in our prayers! Glad to hear of his speedy recovery. He’s a super nice guy and deserves nothing but the best. I haven’t seen him in years now, but he was always a great guy to deal with professionally and as a person. I am sure if extra funds are needed to help with his recovery, someone in the comics community can get a fund going that I would be happy to donate to.

  14. Dianne Sahakian says:

Hi Kathy It does sound like Peter is getting better it will take time for him to be completely well from his stroke, and may he get better as fast as possible and get his strength back in his bad side so he can stand then walk, it will be great to see him have a complete recovery which is what I am praying for for him and also for you to keep your strength up to help him, and your daughter to understand about his stroke.

  15. Steve Bedigian says:

I know all too well the feeling of time expanding and contracting all at once. It will come back. This is one of those times for you.

You’re in the worst part of it right now. You will get through it. Praying for you in the meantime.

  17. Hulkin' Vulcan says:

So glad to see Peter is recovering. Glad to see you are on your way to getting better.

That is very good news. I have been following Peter’s progress intently because I was in the same situation in 2004. I am very glad his condition is improving and hope he will make a full recovery like I did.

  22. Bruno Stahl says:

Kathleen allow me to say how strongly i thought on for Peter’s fast recovering. I was really thrilled to meet him at London super comic con this year and was scared when i heard the news.
Luckily he’s as strong as the characters he writes and will accomplish a full recovery soon.
Peter David was a important part of my learning and a fav writer and myself and all his fans won’t let you and Peter alone on this, you can count on us.
